The movement creating transformative change

We’ve put together a special video to showcase some of the highlights of 2024—moments of change and hope that have only been possible because of your support. This year, thanks to your unwavering support, we have made significant progress in creating opportunities for children to dream, speak up, and shape their own futures.

Whether here in Aotearoa New Zealand, across the Pacific, or around the world, we have worked alongside children, families, and communities to ensure children’s voices are heard, their needs are met, and their futures transformed. Every step we’ve taken has contributed to a brighter tomorrow for millions of children.

Save the Children works to save and improve children’s lives here and around the world.

While most children in Aotearoa New Zealand enjoy a happy and fulfilling childhood, too many children are being left behind without a chance to realise their potential.

We work with our supporters and partners to advocate and campaign for change to improve child wellbeing, realise children’s rights and ensure children’s voices are heard.

We bring years of international experience and stories of good practice from around the world. Our approach includes empowering and listening to children so that their experiences and aspirations inform policy decisions.

In New Zealand, Save the Children pushes for change in many areas, but our campaigns have a particular focus on children’s rights and investing in the early years of a child’s life.

Children and young people have a right to be heard. While they may not yet vote, the decisions made today shape their lives now and into the future. As we face global challenges, it’s vital to consider their views and ensure leaders act in children’s best interests.

To address the challenges facing children in Aotearoa, we’ve developed five key asks for political parties to uphold children’s rights and wellbeing.

In 1989, the UN adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCROC), setting a global standard for how children should be treated.

This framework outlines what every child needs to survive, grow, and thrive, regardless of who they are or where they come from. It remains the foundation of our work, as the most comprehensive and widely-ratified human rights treaty in history.

New Zealand ratified the Convention in 1993, committing to uphold these rights for all children.

We are dedicated to improving the lives of children who are being left behind. Too many children in Aotearoa face poverty, lack access to basic needs like food, clothing, and warm homes, and miss out on opportunities to reach their full potential. By focusing on child wellbeing, we aim to create a world where every child can thrive, free from poverty and disadvantage.
Creating lasting change for children requires collective effort. That’s why we work in partnership with communities, other not-for-profit organizations, businesses, and governments. Together, we tackle challenges like child poverty, education gaps, and health inequalities. By bringing people and organizations together, we ensure our work has a far-reaching and sustainable impact on children’s lives in Aotearoa and around the world.
